We focus on helping you strengthen your bond, improve communication, and develop practical tools to navigate the ups and downs of your relationship. Whether you’re working through specific issues or simply seeking to deepen your connection, we’re here to guide you every step of the way.

Every relationship is unique, and we’re committed to honoring your individual experiences, identities, and dynamics. Let’s work together to cultivate a partnership that reflects the best of both of you.

Couple Counseling and Insurance:
What You Need to Know

We understand how important it is to make informed decisions about your care. While we wish couples counseling were covered by health insurance, most plans do not provide coverage.

Health insurance typically covers counseling only for the treatment of diagnosed mental health conditions. If your insurance company claims they cover couples counseling, they usually mean sessions where one partner is the “identified patient” with a diagnosed mental illness, and the other partner participates to support that individual’s treatment. In these cases:

  •  A mental health diagnosis must be made and submitted to the insurance company.

  • Therapy notes and progress reports focus solely on the identified partner’s condition and treatment.

  • The diagnosis becomes part of the patient’s permanent medical record, which may impact future applications for life insurance, long-term care insurance, or certain careers.

Couples counseling, however, focuses on the relationship itself—addressing communication, trust, emotional connection, intimacy, parenting, and more. Since this work does not target a specific mental health diagnosis, it is not considered “medically necessary” and therefore is not covered by insurance. Additionally, billing insurance for couples counseling under an individual diagnosis is unethical and could be considered insurance fraud.

We recognize that this can be frustrating, and we’re committed to helping you get the most out of your investment. Our couples counseling sessions are $200 for a 90-minute appointment. This extended session allows space for both partners to feel heard and supported while benefiting from the advanced training and expertise of our counselors.

If you have any questions or need further clarification, please don’t hesitate to reach out. We appreciate your understanding and look forward to supporting you on your journey together.

Couples Counseling & Relationship Counseling: Understanding the Difference

At Wild Mind Counseling, we recognize the diverse ways people connect and build relationships. Couples counseling focuses on the traditional two-partner dynamic, supporting those in dyadic relationships to improve communication, navigate challenges, and strengthen their bond. Relationship counseling, on the other hand, embraces non-traditional relationship structures, including polyamory, ethical non-monogamy, open relationships, and other unique dynamics. This approach focuses on fostering understanding, trust, and healthy communication within these relationships, whether they involve multiple partners or complex arrangements. No matter your relationship structure, we provide a nonjudgmental space to explore and nurture the connections that matter most to you.
